Beautiful Group Photo:
Rememory is a reminiscence platform that combines virtual scrapbooking and collaborative features to foster closeness in families affected by dementia.
Guided by a family caregiver, dementia patients and their relatives collaborate on a virtual Story of their life. Photos and videos are curated and displayed to facilitate engagement, bringing memories to life with the tap of a button. Ongoing and instant content creation nurtures closeness among family members, even when they’re apart.
With Rememory, reminiscence becomes a healing experience by bringing families to mind.
For families dealing with dementia, the emotional repercussions of the disease often create the biggest hurdles. Rememory aims to harness the known therapeutic benefits of reminiscence therapy to comfort both the patient and their loved ones.
Rememory does this by allowing patients and their families to collaborate on a virtual scrapbook of photos and videos, curating existing material via a tagging system while also facilitating the creation of new content from within Rememory itself. The platform is split into a ‘caregiver view’ and a ‘patient view’: the former primarily focusing on ease of content management by the family and caregivers for the benefit of the patient, while the latter is geared towards maximizing the therapeutic potential of reminiscence for the patient themselves. In this way, Rememory counteracts the emotional difficulties that come with dementia for everyone in the family.
Most importantly, Rememory is adaptable to the needs of the patient, empowering them by providing them agency and evoking feelings of familiarity and connectivity. Its design is conducive for usage by both patients in the early stages of dementia, emphasizing agency in its use, while also working hand-in-hand with caregiver-guided reminiscence for individuals in later stages.
The use of simple technology to these ends means that Rememory has the capacity to be expanded for even higher impacts while maintaining low costs. The opportunity to integrate Rememory with existing social networks will make it easier for users to be encouraged to come back and continue to add content. Importantly, patterns of use and associated metrics (e.g. length of time a particular photo or category of content is viewed, cognitive capacity to recognize and understand content, habitual viewing patterns and associated affective reactions, etc.) create an invaluable opportunity for research and maintaining a record of the progression of a patient’s condition. Rememory is, at the very least, a therapeutic tool for families and patients affected by dementia, and at its fullest potential, a methodical tool for better gauging the very nuanced and poorly understood trajectory of Dementia.
