Seva, a community in caring
A social platform that allows users with dementia and their caregivers to access and provide care from a credit based system. Credits are earned by people providing services on behalf of their loved ones who need care and live with mild to moderate dementia. Those who need care are able to use credits for everyday tasks to continue living independently at home. This allows families living far from their loved ones to provide care to a third person with the reassurance that someone is doing the same for them without the exchange of money.

The full story:
Society has changed. We no longer live and spend our last days in the same town we were born. We move many times due to jobs or personal circumstances, and sometimes end up living far from the ones we love. This presents a challenge as they age and need to access care in order to continue living independently. When a family member or loved one is diagnosed with dementia, it can be life changing. These changes are hard enough if you are near, but magnified if you are living far away. We want to help. We want to be involved but can’t due to geographical constraints.
Seva is built with these people in mind. Seva, a sanskrit term for ¨service¨, wants to leverage the 19.1 million hours of unpaid, un-formal, and direct caregiver support provided each year in Canada. This is achieved by creating a platform where people provide care for those living with dementia, in exchange for similar supports for their loved ones.
While there are both government and private agencies in place to do this already, both have pros and cons. Private supports can be flexible in the services they provide, but can be very expensive and as such, limited. Government supports can be free or subsidised, but dictated by a third party in the times and duration, thus causing a limitation in providing personal care.
Our platform allows users to post and remove care requests for themselves or their proxy as needed without penalty. The decision to accept or refuse care providers lies with the person requesting the service. Through an online module, service providers are educated on the basic principles of dementia, and how to care and interact with users living with dementia.
Seva acknowledges that plans change, emergencies happen and sometimes all we want is a quick check-in or to have social interaction with someone who cares and wants to help. By removing money from the transaction and engaging social human resources, we provide an expanded community of caregivers linked only by their desire to help persons with dementia to continue living independently.
Serve Everyone. Value All.
